Copenhagen: C is for Cake

In January, myself and my partner Ross, took off to Copenhagen for a long weekend, as we both have January birthdays and enjoy a winter getaway. We stayed in a hotel a few minutes walk from the little harbour - Nyhavn - and spent the weekend doing the typical touristy sightseeing ; The Royal Palace, the Little Mermaid Statue, and eating / drinking loads.

A fond memory I have of that weekend, and one visit I would strongly recommend, was a "coffee and cake" visit to Conditori La Glace. Describing itself as "the oldest and best confectioner in Denmark", La Glace is a beautiful old-style tea room, selling the most gorgeous array of cakes, available for both sit-in and take-away.

We arrived ~12pm (having not booked a table) and probably queued outside for about 20 minutes before getting seated. This was to be expected when visiting, as it is an extremely popular place for both tourists and locals, so be prepared to wait! When inside, we noticed it is beautifully furnished and decorated, and boasts a warm, sweet atmosphere.

Hot Chocolate and Cake for Two

We ordered hot chocolate for two, and 2 bits of "cake"- I had black forest gateaux, and Ross had a rhubarb and almond pie with ice-cream.

The portions were absolutely huge, however, perhaps slightly embarrassed to admit we cleared our plates (however it could be boxed if you were unable to finish what you had ordered).

The hot chocolate was also to die for- really rich and chocolatey- although it was, I'll repeat, extremely rich - presumably which is why they have taps for water and clean glasses dotted around the tea room for customers to help themselves!

A visit to Conditori La Glace however, is not cheap. We paid ~£35 for what was essentially 2 bits of cake, and 2 hot chocolates.

Given the circumstances (we were on holiday, Jan is our birthday months and all) we convinced ourselves we could justify this. However, if you do pay a visit, make sure you either budget for it, take your credit card, or maybe just leave the wee ones at home!
